PRAGYA SANDESH – 21st Century, Bright Future
(A weekly periodical by All World Gayatri Pariwar Youth Group, Bangalore Branch)
www.awgp.org
Objective of the Periodical: The root causes of the ailing state of the world today are – the crisis of faith, people’s ignorance of the powers of the inner self, and the lack of righteous attitude. These have evaporated the oceans of joy from people’s life and polluted them with ever increasing insecurities, infirmities and complexities. Realizing the hidden power of thoughts is very important in the present era of intellectual evolution. This periodical will serve as a vehicle for thought transformation for the revival of Satyug - the divine era.

Marmik Katha (Story that touches our hearts):

                                   Purification of Heart

After the war of Mahabharat the Pandavas were disconsolate and guilt-ridden for having killed their own kinsmen. To absolve themselves of their guilt, Pandavas along with Draupadi and mother Kunti set out for pilgrimage.

On their way they stopped at the hermitage of Maharshi Vyas. Maharshi extended a warm welcome and asked them to stay on at his place for some time. After a few days, when the Pandavas went to take leave of Maharshi for further journey, the Maharshi handed over a tumba (a bitter fruit) to Yudhishthir and said, “Son, at the time of bathing in water at sacred places see that this tumba also takes a few dips. With you this tumba will also become pure.”

Pandavas were very much pleased to do this service for Maharshi. They carefully carried that precious tumba with them and always dipped it into the pious rivers at the time of taking bath.

When the Pandavas returned, their last stay was again at Maharshi Vyas’s hermitage.  Maharshi was extremely delighted to see the whole family. After resting awhile, Dharmraj Yudhishthir brought out that tumba and placing the same before Vyas ji said, “Lord! This is your tumba. We dipped it in all the pious rivers without fail.” Vyasji looked at the tumba and then said to Bhima, “Son! Cut this tumba into pieces. All of us will benefit ourselves by eating it as a prasad of the religious places.”

Bhima cut the same and Draupadi distributed one piece to all. Maharshi picked up one piece and tasted it. He immediately spat it out hatefully and exclaimed, "Oh! It is as bitter now as it was before. Did you also feel its bitterness?”

Arjuna replied, “Sir! Tumba is always bitter in taste, how can it taste sweet?” Maharshi Vyas raising his eyes asked, “But, Son! It has taken pious dips at religious places, it should have become sweet by now. People go on pilgrimages to get rid of their inner bitterness i.e. evil”.

Kunti could not resist herself and spoke, "Lord!  Laws of Nature are unbreakable. Can tumba's taste ever be changed by dipping it in water?" Maharshi Vyas replied, "No Devi, Laws of Nature are universal, how can they change? My tumba has returned as it was. All of you have also returned as you were. Is there any difference in your guilty conscience? Perversions that overshadow human nature can be washed away only by cleansing the inner most heart and not the body. "

The burdens of heart are never lessened by running away from them. For this one has to burn in the fire of penance. Only the fire of earnest repentance that is able to purge one's conscience. Repentance itself is the highest tapasya or penance.

Upakhyan (Anecdote):

This incident belongs to the days of Independence Movement. A session of the Kathiawar state public corporation was going on. Bapu was sitting on the dais along with other leaders. Just then he happened to see an old man sitting at a distance. Gandhiji felt as if he had known that person. After some time he could recollect that old man had been his teacher in his childhood. Bapu immediately got down from the dais, went to the old man and after paying him respects, sat down near his feet. He asked the teacher about the welfare of his family.

After a while the teacher said “Now you go back to the dais. Leaders might be waiting for you.” Bapu said, “No, no! I am comfortable here, I don’t want to go to the dais. Sitting here I will see all the proceedings. You please don’t worry.” After the meeting, the teacher blessed Gandhiji saying, “Only a man who is without vanity like you deserves to be called great.”
